One of the most important aspects of any sport is what you do in the off-season. Personally, doing anything athletic is a big step in keeping you ready for the coming season. Cross training is a great way to keep in shape and have fun, as well as not having wrestling overkill. Play another sport or just do club or recreation sports or even just play a pick up game with friends weekly, but do something.
If you really love wrestling, wrestling camps and/or clubs are always a great thing to do. This keeps you in touch with wrestling all year round. Find camps that emphasize not only on technique and conditioning, but promote the sport in a positive way. Camps like these really help athletes keep with the sport because it's fun as well as competitive.
There are clubs that you can attend where just hanging out and having a good time while learning the sport is one of the best ways to keep up with wrestling.
RUNNING!
As much as some of you guys hate running it is one of the best things a wrestler can do. It builds your lungs and your legs to work for long periods of time. Not only does it help keep you in shape, but for those of you who want to drop in weight or keep near a weight, it helps you do that too.
ALL IT TAKES IS...
-- AT LEAST A 15 MIN. RUN on 3 or more days a week-- this will greatly improve weight control.
WEIGHT TRAINING:
Training with weights can be a good thing, but PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE READY FOR IT! I would suggest seeing a physician to see if your son is ready to do so. Lifting too early can have some effects on the body and growth of your child (I'm no doctor, but I have heard a few things). So check with a doctor before doing so.
Body weight training is a great substitute and cheaper. SIT UPS, PUSH UPS and PULL UPS are some of the greatest things any athlete can keep up with on a daily basis.
Lift slow, but wrestle fast... when lifting: make it a 2 sec/4 sec differential; for example:
Bench Press: it should take 2 secs to bring the bar down, 4 secs to push the bar up
Curls: 2 secs down... 4 secs up
EATING:
I'm not much of diet person. Personally, eat what you like, but try to stay as healthy as possible. I think you guys know what eating a piece of pizza before a match will do to you.
A few key things are:
- EAT BREAKFAST: it kicks up your metabolism early.
- EAT CONSISTENTLY: breakfast, lunch and dinner and/or something small every two hours
- EAT PROTEIN: builds, rebuilds and repairs muscles
- DRINKING WATER: hydration and helps repair muscles |
